About UGC-NET Exam
The UGC-NET is a national-level test that determines the eligibility of Indian nationals for:
- Award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
- Appointment as Assistant Professor and Admission to Ph.D.
- Admission to Ph.D. only
The test ensures that only qualified candidates are eligible to teach or pursue research in Indian universities and colleges.
Eligibility Criteria of NTA UGC NET December 2025
Age Limit
- For JRF: Not more than 30 years as on 01.12.2025
(Relaxation of 5 years for OBC-NCL, SC/ST, PwD, Third Gender, and women candidates.) - For Assistant Professor & Ph.D. Admission:
No upper age limit.
Educational Qualification
(a) General/Unreserved/EWS candidates must have secured at least 55% marks in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from a UGC-recognized institution.
(b) OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/Third gender candidates must have at least 50% marks.
(c) Candidates pursuing or awaiting results of Master’s degree (final year) are also eligible to apply.
(d) Candidates with a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree should have 75% marks or equivalent grade.
- Those qualifying NET through this route are eligible only for JRF and Ph.D. admission, not for Assistant Professor.
(e) Candidates currently in the final semester of a 4-year Bachelor’s programme can also apply provisionally.
